Audio from Janet Smith and Jason Evert. Even if you’re pro contraceptives, I challenge you to listen to this entire clip.

I wish someone would put the whole lecture on YouTube. As it stands now, they already do give the CD away for free…

“Guns don’t kill people, people kill people”

The same is true of contraception. The problem is not with the usage of contraceptives, it is with the sinful nature of humans. What isn’t mentioned here is that many, many Christian couples, who waited to have sex until marriage, who are faithful to their spouses, who consider themselves to be “pro-life”, use the pill. As far as the pill and it’s side effects, I used the pill for 3.5 years, got pregnant, had a baby and went on again 14 months after my daughter’s birth. I never experienced ANY real bad side effects. I felt that I was able to work on my marriage’s stability, both emotional and financially before I decided to have children. To me, children are a huge blessing and I didn’t want to have a child and not be able to adequately provide and care for the child, given my time and resources. When I did decide to have a child, she is an immense blessing and I was able to cherish my motherhood to the fullest.

See, I don’t think it’s the pill that is responsible for irresponsible sexual behavior, it’s humans. The pill prevents pregnancy pretty good, but it doesn’t prevent STDs or the emotional after-effects of sleeping with someone and them then leaving you. So I believe the pill is an amazing tool to a married couple because it enables them with the ability to plan out children and decide what number is right for them, whether it be 0, 2, or 8.

And, as far as the so-called “abortifacient” effect of the pill. I encourage you to read this link http://www.aaplog.org/decook.htm. It is a statement from Pro-Life physicians stating their views about the pill. MOST pro-life physicians are strongly in support of the pill and do NOT believe it is abortifacient. I understand that many people don’t feel “right” about taking the pill, but stating that it is a fact that it’s abortifacient is, in many ways, statistically flawed.

I have not heard much objection to the statement that one of the ways the pill works is to thin out the endometrium, thus potentially causing early chemical abortions, so I’ll have to look into more data on that. I’ll try to find original sources for you.

As far as the relationship between the pill and immorality, I respectfully disagree. I think you understood the video as saying that “The Pill always causes permiscuity and adultery.” That’s incorrect, as we both know many people who are faithful to their spouse on the pill. However, I believe the data shows a very strong correlation between the onset of popular use of the pill and the rise in permiscuity, children out of wedlock, fatherless families, abortion rates, infidelity rates, etc. There’s certainly a difference between causation and correlation, sociologically speaking, but correlation is central to identifying social patterns. I encourage you to read a good article by Dr. Bradford Wilcox, a well established sociologist of the family. While some people may say he’s biased because he’s Christian, he’s a strict social scientist willing to follow the data wherever it goes.

As a side note, natural methods of family planning are reliable, effective and a shared responsibility that make for great marriages. I would mirror your statement about the pill, saying that *NFP is an amazing tool* because it ALSO lets a couple decide what number is right for them. It gives them a sense of cherishing the gift of their fertility and not withholding anything from their beloved. Men report high levels of satisfaction with NFP, believe it or not. (See my post: http://nfpworks.wordpress.com/2008/03/25/new-nfp-methods-appeal-to-wide-range-of-women/)

It sounds to me like you may be a faithful Christian who has struggled on the issue of the morality of contraception. Perhaps I am wrong, and forgive me if I am wrong, but I know the stresses that come with being in a military family, especially if one comes from a background of faith. Look, it’s good that you haven’t felt the common side effects of the Pill, but I would challenge you even if you’re skeptical, to do more research on Natural Family Planning: http://www.omsoul.com, and to listen to the revised copy of the whole Janet Smith CD. You can even order it free, so you don’t have to give money to people you may disagree with.

You’re welcome, Michelle, Brianne et al. My apologies for the sometimes long stretches between entries, but that’s the way my work goes sometimes. (Repeating calmly to myself) “People first, blog second…People first, blog second…” Please pray for people, especially Christians, who are resistant to this message.

Siej Raia, rock on for checking out a blog that’s certainly got a bit of a different message. Look into more about birth control and natural family planning at http://www.omsoul.com (a bit religious) or also my friend’s site here: http://www.madisondiocese.org/nfp. Are you here in the States?
